"What you resist persists."
-- Ancient Eastern text
********************************************************************
When I first heard this saying it was in the context of the Martial
Arts and it made perfect sense to me. Resistance heightens anxiety.
As the ancient axiom suggests, whatever we give our life's energy
to we get more of. If we give our energy to aggression we get more
aggression. If we give our energy to collaboration we get more
collaboration. If we give our energy to fear, we'll get plenty to
be afraid of.
The human experience means we will suffer. Oddly enough, I've
accepted that difficulty (or suffering) is my best shot at a fresh
opportunity and resistance takes me farther from my goal. As a
practical matter, daily I must tell myself to say yes to
difficulties, because when I say no to difficulties, I get more
of what I don't want and less of what I do.
