From e-nspirations at jeankelley.com Mon Feb 16 23:21:36 2009 From: e-nspirations at jeankelley.com (e-nspirations@jeankelley.com) Date: Mon Feb 16 23:21:37 2009 Subject: [e-nspirations] Small Cogs and Important Choices Message-ID: <20090217052136.66698C03D@mail.sus4.net> ******************************************************************** "It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities." -- Joanne Rowling ******************************************************************** Fact: Science has proven that our behavior influences all the lives around us, and we do it every day. Granted, it's rare when anyone is a big cog, someone able to a great deal of good at one time. Most of us can't give ten million to a charity or invent a magnificent technology, yet we can change our world with small actions. All of us are cogs. Most of us are small cogs in the greater scheme of things. Yet we have choices. Living fully is about little things: the way we treat ourselves, our family members, our peers and even the way we treat the service providers in our lives. Just saying hello and giving a big warm smile to everyone we encounter helps them and helps us as well. Doing a little good here and there counts. Each morning we can make a decision to do good for ourselves and to do good for the people we care about. Making the decision is the hard part. After making the decision the doing becomes easy. Most of us are small cogs in the greater scheme of things. Yet we have choices. We can go to our posts rusty and raspy. Or we can go well oiled and ready to do our part for this day. by Jean Kelley e-nspire a friend!! Lewis ******************************************************************** Times are challenging. Money is tight. Emotions are unstable. The markets are fluctuating. No matter how overwhelming our tasks appear, no matter how intractable our challenges feel, no matter how important or unimportant our role in the world, we all wake up with the same precious gift in our possession -- 24 hours of non-refundable time. Many of you who are reading this are not procrastinators. For those of us who are, we put things off for a number of reasons. We put off tasks, especially big ones, because we don't know where to begin or we "don't have time." As my friend and mentor Cavett Robert said in his halting, melodic, Mississippi drawl: "If someone told me / that I could have / all the $20 bills I could count between now and 4:00 this afternoon / do you think I wouldn't have time?!?" As you hear yourself saying, "I don't have time," it helps to remember that everyone everywhere has the same amount of time. Whatever we do or don't do with our hours, they all come sixty seconds at a time. by Jean Kelley e-nspire a friend!! Resistance heightens anxiety. As the ancient axiom suggests, whatever we give our life's energy to we get more of. If we give our energy to aggression we get more aggression. If we give our energy to collaboration we get more collaboration. If we give our energy to fear, we'll get plenty to be afraid of. The human experience means we will suffer. Oddly enough, I've accepted that difficulty (or suffering) is my best shot at a fresh opportunity and resistance takes me farther from my goal. As a practical matter, daily I must tell myself to say yes to difficulties, because when I say no to difficulties, I get more of what I don't want and less of what I do. by Jean Kelley e-nspire a friend!! Maybe it wasn't a goal at all. Maybe it was a secret desire, something we wanted and were afraid to go for: something that involved risk. If you are holding a $1 bill and you see that someone on the other side of the room is willing to give you $100, you must take the first step, and let go of the dollar bill to grasp the $100 bill. There will be a point of insecurity between the time you let go of the dollar and the time you grasp the $100 bill. Letting go involves risk.... by Jean Kelley e-nspire a friend!!
