"The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be
appreciated."
-- William James

Praise, just like criticism, needs to be delivered with skill. After
all, sincere praise truly is a gift. Some people are as embarrassed
by praise as they are by receiving an unexpected gift.

In learning how to make appropriate compliments, we need to
distinguish between flattery and praise. Flattery focuses on what
someone has no control over and did nothing to earn. Praise is
aimed at a behavior, accomplishment or an attitude. Consider using
the word 'you' in your compliment. It's perfectly acceptable to
make comments like, "I admire the way you kept your cool during
that heated exchange," "You did a good job on that presentation,"
"You came up with a great idea, thanks," "I appreciate how you
took the time to help that new employee."

People all over the world go to bed hungry for appreciation. Look
for opportunities to praise. The time to praise people is not when
you want something in return. Catch people doing something right
and praise them for it.
