Over time, we were indoctrinated by layers of voices, and we became distanced from our own core; that deep and eternal part of us. Every day we are encouraged to believe that life will be perfect if we try harder; that we can surely do things better, or faster. The voices of popular culture, education, politics, and business wash over us, giving us the notion that there is some perfect norm of correctness that we should live up to. We each have our own principles and possibilities, separate from the "shoulds" in our head. Our principles come from our core and are determined by our values -- by what we hold dear. When we honor our principles, we will trust ourselves and our principles will lead us in a direction that is good for us. Joy is cultivated when we make decisions in harmony with the core of our heart, and as Goethe said, "then we will know how to live." by Jean Kelley e-nspire a friend!! Some of us have even been that person! Just because a person is the most forceful in the group doesn't mean he/she knows what is best and what is right. The non-dominant voices around us are worth hearing. When we find ourselves getting more and more insistent that we are right, it is time to take two steps back from the conversation, put our hands in our pockets, open our ears, and think. Our own opinions are just opinions, and rarely are they the only ones infused with inspiration, creativity and good judgment. by Jean Kelley e-nspire a friend!! After all, sincere praise truly is a gift. Some people are as embarrassed by praise as they are by receiving an unexpected gift. In learning how to make appropriate compliments, we need to distinguish between flattery and praise. Flattery focuses on what someone has no control over and did nothing to earn. Praise is aimed at a behavior, accomplishment or an attitude. Consider using the word 'you' in your compliment. It's perfectly acceptable to make comments like, "I admire the way you kept your cool during that heated exchange," "You did a good job on that presentation," "You came up with a great idea, thanks," "I appreciate how you took the time to help that new employee." People all over the world go to bed hungry for appreciation. Look for opportunities to praise. The time to praise people is not when you want something in return. Catch people doing something right and praise them for it. by Jean Kelley e-nspire a friend!! We also have the ability to talk the talk. Unfortunately, we all will be judged on our deeds rather than on what we say or on what we intend to do. We live in a result-oriented culture, so it's what we DO that counts. Remember the last time someone gave you their word and didn't follow through? We can all recall that type of disappointment. We DON'T have the power to make people honor their commitments; We DO have the power to honor our own. by Jean Kelley e-nspire a friend!! It doesn't. It means we have a starting place for success. You and I have a body of knowledge we can apply to everyday challenges in our careers and in our personal lives. We may study for years, talk about our elegant processes, and even become more educated than our co-workers, bosses, families and colleagues; and still many of us miss the mark. Acquiring knowledge is a worthy and honorable pursuit, yet it means little unless we use that knowledge to get results. Important work comes after planning and analysis are complete. Un-mined opportunities appear each morning with each day giving us 24 hours of precious non-refundable time. Apply your knowledge -- today. Push on. by Jean Kelley e-nspire a friend!!
